Sugar Skulls

★★★★★

Holiday, Non-food

Ingredients

2 cups granulated sugar

4-6 teaspoons water

Royal icing, food safe markers, and/or dragees

Skull mold or skull cake pan

Description

Generally a Day of the Dead alter will include some sort of banner for wind, a glass of water, bread for earth, and candles for fire. Also lots of colorful flowers- typically marigolds and mums. Lastly, sugar skulls.

If one is religious, the alter takes on more than just a decorative meaning and will include portraits and items from deceased loved ones and representations of saints.

Directions

Makes 3 if you are using the Nordic skull pan.

Heat oven to 200°F.

Put the sugar in a bowl and add water. Mix thoroughly with your hand. Start with 4 teaspoons of water and add more if needed; you should be able to squeeze sugar in your hand and have it mold to the shape of your hand.

Press the mixture into the molds, taking time to press really well into all the crevices and fill completely. Firmly pack it in as hard as you can.

Put a lined baking sheet on top of the pan, then very carefully invert. Let the sugar skulls slip out.

Bake skulls for 10 minutes. Let cool completely. Decorate as desired.
